There have been many stories told at the beach over the past six decades and many of them begin "It all started at the Flora-Bama." No matter your age, employment or financial status, if you live in the area you have heard about the world famous beach bar. Some people go for the music, some for the oysters, some for the spirit and there are those those that even go for church. Now the largest "Beach Honky Tonk" is celebrating a anniversary.
On August 18th, the Flora-Bama Lounge, Package & Oyster Bar is throwing a party for it's 60th anniversary. According to their website, Flora-Bama will host the party between 1-5pm on Sunday. There will be Live music from Lucky Doggs, Jason Justice Duo, Kaleb King, Jessie Wilson, Dew Pendltron and more. Attendees who are 21 years of age and older will receive a free drink card.
The Flora-Bama has cherished history along the white sands of the Florida and Alabama line. Founded in 1964 by Theodore “Ted” Tampary and his wife Ellen, Flora-Bama has grown from a small watering hole into an iconic landmark. Situated on the Alabama-Florida state line, the bar was envisioned as a unique venue that would attract both locals and tourists. Despite a mysterious fire delaying its original Independence Day opening, Ted and his sons, Constantine “Connie” and Anthony “Bubba,” persevered to open the lounge and package store on August 1, 1964.
In 1978, Joe Gilchrist bought the Flora-Bama from Tampary and in 1986 Pat McClellan came onboard as a co-owner of the iconic roadhouse. John McInnis and Cam Price joined the ownership team in 2011.
Throughout its six decades, Flora-Bama has hosted various events that have become local traditions. The “Interstate Mullet Toss” and the “Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival” are just two of the many annual events that draw crowds from near and far. The bar also gained international fame when singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett immortalized it in song, highlighting its place in American music culture.
You can join other locals and Flora-Bama fans this weekend "On The Line" and raise a glass to the fun memories of past or the ones you will make in the future.
