Foley, Alabama, often referred to as "The Forward City" and "The Heart of the American Riviera," has demonstrated significant growth recently. In a two-year span between 2020 and 2022, Foley's population increased by almost 3,000, marking the largest growth among cities in Baldwin County and among most communities in Alabama​.

As of 2022, it housed 23,577 residents, ranking 27th on the list of the most populous cities in Alabama. This growth represents a rate of 14.47%, outpacing the next highest increase in the county, Daphne, which saw an 8% growth rate over the same period​. Daphne’s population is around 26,000+ residents. 

The city was founded by John B. Foley of Chicago, who bought a large tract of land in South Baldwin County in the early 1900s. He invested in the development of the city, including the construction of a railroad station, schools, parks, and churches, laying the foundation for the city's growth​.

Foley has seen substantial growth over the past century. In 1920, the population was just 243, but it increased to 20,335 by 2020, a growth rate of 39.1% from the 2010 population. The city's racial composition is primarily White non-Hispanic (73.07%), with notable Hispanic or Latino (8.69%), and Black or African American non-Hispanic (11.5%) communities.

The precise reasons for Foley's recent population boom aren't entirely clear. However, Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich indicates that the city's desirability and quality of life are strong attractions for new residents. The local government is actively working to mitigate the challenges brought by this growth, investing in infrastructure and quality of life enhancements​.

Additionally, Foley is home to several large employers, including the local school system, which likely contributes to its appeal as a place to live and work.

Foley's impressive population growth over the last few years cements its status as a city on the rise within Alabama. The next highest increase in both numbers and percentage was in Daphne, which added 1,989 residents over the two-year period. The city’s population grew by 8%, from 24,981 to 26,970.

• Robertsdale had a 6.66% increase in population, from 6,745 to 7,189

• Fairhope’s population increased by 5.14% from 22,692 to 23,859.

• Spanish Fort grew by 4.7% from 10,177 to 10,656.

• Summerdale’s population increased 4.1% from 1,497 to 1,557.

• Elberta’s population increased by 3.32% from 1,984 to 2,050.

• Perdido Beach grew by 2.7% from 552 to 567.

• Magnolia Springs grew by 2% from 808 to 828.

• Bay Minette’s population increased by 155 from 8,122 to 8,277, a rate of 1.9%.
