Alabama is surrounded by states that offer lotteries or a similar form of gambling. The last time Alabama citizens voted on a lottery was in 1999, when they rejected Gov. Don Siegelman’s gambling package. In this year's "State of the State" address Governor Kay Ivey said "Now is the time for Alabama voters to have another say on this issue."
This has been of deep interest for people along the Alabama coast since many people have spoken about the area being a prime location for casinos and gambling outlets. Specific details on the House’s gambling proposal have been scarce so far, but possible offerings in their proposal could include new legalized casino gambling, a state lottery, sports betting and the creation of an Alabama Gaming Commission.
