Take a journey across the pond and back in time to England 1910 for Disney’s Mary Poppins JR the musical. Don’t miss the opportunity to come out in support of the OBMHS theater as they bring back not one but four “supercalif-ragilistic-expialidocious” performances of this “practically perfect in every way” production. The story follows the troubled Banks family and their experiences with the magical nanny, Mary Poppins. Through a combination of whimsical thrills and a dash of common sense, watch and learn as she teaches the family and audience the simplicity of simply valuing one another. Join in for familiar and captivating scenes, memorable songs and stunning dance numbers by cheering the performers on, and singing along as they showcase their styles in this classic rendition of Mary Poppins.  In the 1700s, two brothers began experimenting with what they believed was a new gas. They burned fuel in a container to release hot air into paper bags, naming it "Montgolfier Gas" after themselves. In 1783, they successfully launched the first hot air balloon. Initially, hot air balloons were used mainly for scientific and military purposes. Eventually, they became a fun recreational activity for people of all ages to admire and enjoy. Advancements in technology have made hot air balloon flights safer and longer, allowing us to experience the beautiful and colorful hot air balloon rides we have today. One beloved local event that celebrates this is the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival in Foley. Join in for the fun starting Thursday night with the “Balloon Glow,” open from 5 to 9 PM. Then, come back on Friday at 4PM for more festivities, including balloon rides, tethered rides, and more happening from 10 AM to 10 PM on Saturday. This event is an exciting experience, whether you’re stopping by for an evening that lights up the skies or attending all day to enjoy vendors, food, and, of course, the hot air balloon rides starting on Friday.

If you’re looking for a place to watch the Kentucky Derby, look no further than CoastAL, where there’s more than just the race happening. A true Derby party aligns with the rich traditions of big hats, and CoastAL Beach Bar is embracing this with a twist of Southern charm. In the early 20th century, the Kentucky Derby became a social spectacle, encouraging women to wear elaborate hats that signified their social status. The trend emphasized the grandeur of these hats, which were often large and adorned with rich embellishments such as feathers, floral arrangements, ribbons, and occasionally even live birds. The more eye-catching the hat, the better—each detail was a reflection of one's status. By the 1960s, the trend of ostentatiously large hats evolved further, as participants sought to capture attention both in the stands and on television broadcasts. This practice transitioned from an elite custom to a vibrant display of personal expression, making the Derby a global stage for diverse and extravagant headwear. So come out and show off your style! The event will feature curated cocktails and showcase CoastAL’s Southern flair and sophistication. Most importantly, there will be a hat and style contest, with prizes including a full-day pontoon boat rental from the Flora-Bama for the Exacta winner (Best Derby Hat - Male), gift cards of up to $300 for the Superfecta (Best Duo Outfit), and the Trifecta award for the Best Derby Hat - Female. No prior reservations are necessary; attendees are encouraged to arrive in their finest Derby attire to fully engage in the festivities.

By Allison Marlow April 28, 2025
Fabulous fashions, delicious cocktails, a week of partying – sounds a little like Mardi Gras, doesn’t it? But this celebration is the Kentucky Derby, the oldest, continuously running sports event in the United States. Since its first run in 1875, the event has been held the first weekend in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, despite wars and the Great Depression.
