Local Waffle Houses are adding a 50-cent per egg surcharge to customers' orders, referencing the impact of ongoing egg shortages and rising prices caused by bird flu.
Instead of increasing prices across its menu, the 24-hour breakfast chain is opting for "a temporary targeted surcharge tied to the unprecedented rise in egg prices," the Georgia-based company said in a statement. "While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last."

Bird Flu is forcing farmers to slaughter millions of chickens a month, pushing U.S. egg prices to more than double their cost in the summer of 2023.
Depending on where you live, a dozen eggs could cost anywhere from $4 to more than $8.
To combat rising egg prices, you can: buy eggs in bulk when available, consider local farmers markets for potentially lower prices, explore alternative egg sources like plant-based substitutes, cook meals that use fewer eggs, or even consider raising your own backyard chickens to produce your own eggs. If you raise chickens your neighbor may complain about the rooster getting up too early.
