Citing growing concern over congested waters in the city and the many marine businesses operating, Orange Beach will consider a six-month moratorium on businesses licenses for fishing or other marine businesses.
The city council will meet in a joint work/regular session at the Orange Beach Community Center beginning at 5 p.m., June 20th.
“It is believed that a number of commercial vessels currently operate without a City of Orange Beach Business License and in direct violation of City Code,” a resolution attached to the meeting agenda states. It is unknown if these vessels/businesses are following maritime safety protocol and/or are properly insured.”
The resolution also expressed safety concerns about personal safety and damage to the environment.
“Commercial vessels significantly contribute to the congestion of our waterways and deterioration of natural resources,” the resolution states. “The Council has determined that the above facts have resulted in a significant danger to the health, safety, and welfare of the public.”
