The City of Orange Beach is considering amending its noise ordinance, with a focus on construction activity. During a meeting Tuesday night, city officials advanced a proposal that would restrict construction-related noise from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily and prohibit it entirely on Sundays. The noise ordinance is set for further discussion at the city council meeting in two weeks.

The proposed change aims to address ongoing concerns from residents and visitors about early-morning and late-night construction noise, particularly in residential areas and vacation rental zones. Currently, construction work is permitted earlier and later than the proposed time frame, prompting complaints about disturbances during traditionally quiet hours.

City leaders emphasized that the amendment is intended to strike a balance between the needs of the growing community and the rights of residents to enjoy peace and quiet. Mayor Tony Kennon acknowledged the importance of construction for the city's expansion but stressed the need to ensure that development does not come at the expense of residents' quality of life.

“We’ve heard the concerns from our community, and this change is a step toward preserving the tranquility that makes Orange Beach such a desirable place to live and visit,” said Mayor Kennon.

The ordinance would apply to all construction-related activities, including residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. Violators could face fines or other penalties if found operating outside the permitted hours.

While many residents support the change, some contractors have expressed concerns about the impact on project timelines and potential delays due to weather-related setbacks. City officials acknowledged these concerns but maintain that the adjustments are necessary to maintain a reasonable noise level during off-hours.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend the upcoming meeting to voice their opinions before the decision is finalized.

On coastlines around the United States jetties are often used to protect harbor and inlet entrances. They are also some of the most dangerous waters for swimming. According to NOAA, jetties can contribute to increased drowning risks, especially due to the presence of rip currents and the potential for dangerous currents and changes in water depth near the structures. Jetties can also make it more difficult to enter and exit the water safely due to sharp rocks and the force of waves.
