Gulf Shores Area Expects Cold And Possibly Dangerous Weather

Over the next two days the area of Gulf Shores and surrounding communities are forecasted to have freezing temperatures and the possibility of ice on local bridges. There is also a chance of precipitation that falls from the sky as ice crystals, something northerners call snow.
On a serious note, these conditions could be dangerous for drivers and local governments are asking residents to refrain from traveling unless needed. Cities have announced their office closures and rescheduled some of their services. Numerous local businesses will remain closed on Tuesday so their staffs can be with their families and their patrons will remain safe.
The National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama has stated a "Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the area from 6am Tuesday through 6am Wednesday. The timing of accumulating snow begins Tuesday morning and continues into the evening. Heaviest accumulations are expected late Tuesday morning through the late afternoon. Most likely snow amounts is between 1-3 inches, although locally up to 5 inches of snow is possible."

• Be aware of black ice: Bridges and overpasses are particularly susceptible to black ice, which is a
thin, invisible layer of ice.
• Avoid sudden braking and steering: These actions can cause your vehicle to lose control.
• Turn on your headlights: This will make your vehicle more visible to other drivers.
• Avoid using cruise control on icy roads: This can cause you to lose control of your vehicle if you
hydroplane.
• Watch for workers: Be aware of emergency personnel and crews treating and clearing roadways.
• Move crashed vehicles: In the event of a minor crash, safely move vehicles off the roadway if
possible to maintain access for first responders and treatment crews. Do not abandon vehicles in
travel lanes.
