Alabama's 14th annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is set for Friday, February 21, through Sunday, February 23, 2025. During this period, residents can purchase essential severe weather preparedness items without paying the state's 4% sales tax. In some areas, local taxes will also be waived, allowing shoppers to save up to 10% on eligible items.
The tax-exempt items include flashlights, batteries, first-aid kits, cell phone chargers, and more, each priced at $60 or less. Portable generators and power cords costing $1,000 or less are also tax-free during this event.
Local hardware stores are preparing to assist their communities. Frank Davies, owner of Little Hardware in Mountain Brook, observed that many customers wait until after a storm to buy supplies. He encourages residents to take advantage of the tax holiday to prepare in advance.
Alabama Retail Association President Rick Brown emphasized the importance of readiness, stating, "Severe weather can occur at any time, in any season." He urges consumers to use this opportunity to stock up on emergency supplies.
