Tolls go away today on Expressway Bridge

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced a new traffic control plan for the Baldwin Beach Express Bridge, effective at noon on Thursday, May 23. With the removal of toll collections, it is crucial for motorists to familiarize themselves with the changes in traffic patterns (see article graphic). This transition period will require patience and cooperation from all drivers to ensure a smooth flow of traffic; especially since it’s taking place on Memorial Weekend, one of the busiest weekends of the season.

One of the key elements to facilitate efficient traffic movement during is the use of the "Zipper Merge" technique. The zipper merge is a proven method for reducing congestion and maximizing the use of available road space. By utilizing both lanes until the designated merge point, and then alternating in a zipper-like fashion, vehicles can merge seamlessly into the single open lane. When all drivers adhere to this practice, it can reduce congestion by up to 40%. Drivers are urged to resist the temptation to merge early, as this can lead to unnecessary backups and delays.

Note: ALDOT has already reduced the speed limits as you're approaching the booths. Headed south, it drops to 35mph pretty early and then it drops to 25mph before reaching the booths.

Once the most powerful and sleek vessel in the world, now the SS United States has set out on its last voyage above the waves to become the largest artificial reef in the world underneath them. Witnesses said a gathered crowd at Fox Point State Park in Wilmington, Delaware, held their breath as the rusted berth passed slowly beneath a series of three bridges, guided by a tugboat and tucked securely in a circling school of police and Coast Guard boats.
