Take a deep dive into the world of imagination where friendship sees no faces and everyone gets a seat at the table. Since 1828 the world has highlighted its fascination with dolls and the life, joy and connection they bring to any playhouse on the second Saturday of June, deemed World Doll Day. One day of the year dedicated to taking out favorite dolls or stuffed animals to show and tell or share and play with friends. Other ways to celebrate the day might include appreciating the unique designs and cultural influences that have shaped different dolls throughout history. Put together a doll hunt, make a homemade doll or outfit, host a doll party, or like one local Orange Beach little girl, start a business where Doll Day can be every day.

Harper Wilkinson, a rising fourth grader, developed a concept sparked by her love of dolls and fantasy where everyone gets along and harmony flows like a cool breeze. Her company is called Doli Lane and her idea recently won her two awards at the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber’s Coastal Alabama Kid Entrepreneurs Program on May 11th aka C.A.K.E. DAY. She earned the Most Original Business and Best Boss awards plus some fun prizes. The young CEO’s motto is “Welcome to Doli Lane where a kid can be an awesome kid!” Local businesses partnered with the Chamber to pull off an incredible day when many young entrepreneurs debuted their businesses for the first time. Wilkinson shared her excitement of the day with a big shout-out to her sponsors, namely Ms. Rachelle, who conducted meetings and helped her bring her “vision to life!” Rachelle Wickman owner of Gulf Coast Title, Mr. Chief and Ms. Kim at BuzzCatz with some delicious cookies all played pivotal roles in contributing to her big day.

The vision was clear as the creator, Wilkinson, wanted a store, “where kids and grown-ups from all diverse backgrounds had a place to use their imagination and be happy.” Having many special and favorite things, such an imaginary friend and blankie, she wanted to design a space “where all of our favorite things are not forgotten,” citing how important it is to take care of things we love and that “help us feel happy and safe.” The outpouring from the community was ringing loud and proud for the island entrepreneurs on C.A.K.E. DAY with reports of success all around town. Wilkinson states how it was everything she’d hoped for but more, because of the people who were there in support or wished her the best on her big day, especially her teacher, Mrs. Edwards, Aunt Danya from Kansas, Aunt Sabi, and last but not least her brother, Mom and Dad it also happened to be the young ladies 9th birthday, she reminisces saying, “so it was a pretty epic day.” 

Upon hearing about World Doll Day, young Wilkinson’s playful and imaginative spirit began leaping for joy with hope of another successful ‘open shop’ opportunity to share her dream with others. The call was answered, and Doli Lane will be up and running on the porch in the shade between BuzzCatz and Luna’s Eat and Drink thanks to the dedicated leaders of these popular establishments. The shop will open around 9:30 AM -1PM and will have some fun and exciting opportunities for others to step into the magical world of imagination, maybe get a little hair glitter and sweets with all their friends matter or not with a special 10% off all Doli Lane products or dolls. BuzzCatz will be open early to fill those caffeine needs, or ask about their new refreshing Ginger Beer and Lemonade options while letting the kiddos play. Be sure to stop by Luna’s for lunch or stick around for dinner and try out one of their yummy Po’Boy’s or seafood gumbo while sipping on an ice-cold brew from the tap.
