The longest month of the year, so far, is finally seeing its last days this week. As we wrap up this extended month, we head into the shortest month of the year. Tuesday, January 30th - Gulf Shores Public Library is hosting the “Author Series.” GSPL has partnered with some well-known prominent authors and presenters. Reputable storyteller Dolores Hydock will share the incredible futuristic technology that helped connect us to the Dutch Golden Age. During this hour, guests will learn about five very important objects from 400 hundred years ago that prove this age was way ahead of their time, showcasing what we think of 21st-century inventions that were actually used back in time. Wednesday, January 31st - Ready for a little healthy competition, awakening the winning spirit in us all? Bingo night with Lisa Christian at Tacky Jacks OB brings all that can’t be beat heat. What better way to welcome carnival month than with a “delightful stage adaptation” of the iconic fantasy tale, “The Wizard of Oz.” Opening night offers one showtime starting at 7 PM with three more show times to follow in the coming days. This beloved “there’s no place like home” feel good story performance hits the stage in Orange Beach with some exciting first time elaborations. The Orange Beach Performing Art Center with the City of Orange Beach Expect Excellence will take their audience to a magical land where one man behind the curtain brings one’s hopes, wishes and dreams to life. This will be the first time OBPC uses the orchestra pit in all its glory. Friday, February 2nd - Join the crowd at “more than just a restaurant” family fun entertainment venue, The Hangout. Every Friday night where 59 ends and the fun begins, the outside stage lights up with live free musical jams for the whole gang to enjoy. Starting at 5 PM, set your sights on the main stage for the Chris Beverly Experience and dance the night away until 7 PM. The Perdido Key Community Center is excited to host a team from the Panhandle Manatee non-profit group at the ready to train volunteers in assisting with outreach and other community events for the new year. The event starts at 10 am and lasts until 11:30. During this time, volunteers will not only get to learn about manatees ``the cows of the sea” but also sign up for future festivals, and outreaches throughout our watersheds. Manatees have a signature habitat that makes civilians help a major player through a network of sighting contacts, safe boating practices and other responsible water practices including seagrass respect.
