Urgent Heat Advisory for Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and beyond

The National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for several coastal counties in Alabama and Florida. The warning is in effect from 10 AM to 8 PM CDT today, August 26, 2023. A subsequent Heat Advisory will be in place from 10 AM to 8 PM CDT on Sunday, August 27, 2023.


Locations

The Excessive Heat Warning covers the following regions:


In Alabama: Mobile Coastal and Baldwin Coastal Counties, including the cities of Bayou La Batre, Dauphin Island, Grand Bay, Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach.


In Florida: Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties, including the cities of Beulah, Ensley, Fort Pickens, Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Perdido Bay, Bagdad, Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Destin, Eglin AFB, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, Seminole, Valparaiso, and Wright.


Weather Conditions

For the Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values reaching up to 115 are expected. For the subsequent Heat Advisory, heat index values are expected to reach up to 112.

Excessive Heat Warning: From 10 AM to 8 PM CDT today, August 26, 2023.

Heat Advisory: From 10 AM to 8 PM CDT on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

Health Impacts

The extreme heat and humidity significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those engaged in outdoor activities or work.


Precautionary Measures

Residents are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Check on relatives and neighbors.
  • Never leave young children or pets unattended in vehicles

For those who must work or spend time outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends:

  • Rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
  • Wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.


Emergency Procedures

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is considered an emergency, and immediate medical attention is required. In such cases, call 9-1-1.
