The Gulf Shores Planning Commission Agenda

Gulf Shores Planning News

A new Family Dollar store may be coming to Gulf Shores on the west side of State Route 59 near the Target shopping center. The Gulf Shores Planning Commission will also hear a request for site plan approval for a new sports facility at the city’s Sportsplex at its Nov. 14 meeting at 4 p.m. at city hall in council chambers.

Applicant Justin Jordan with Elcan Associates is seeking to subdivide a lot at 3863 Gulf Shores Parkway into two lots to build the 10,500-square-foot store on one of the new lots.

A second request from Jordan and Elcan is for site plan approval for the building and city staff recommends approval of both requests with conditions.

On the sports facility, the city seeks site plan approval for a 36,000-square-foot multi-purpose sports facility with indoor and outdoor volleyball courts to be built at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

“The City of Gulf Shores and Pleasure Island Volleyball Club will own and operate the multisport athletic facility,” according to the agenda. “The facility will consist of 7 outdoor sand volleyball courts, indoor flex/gym recreational space that can accommodate up to four indoor volleyball or basketball courts as well as associated restrooms, concessions, office space, and a fitness room.”

It will include 101 parking spaces and the new facility “will continue to improve the athletic offerings at the Sportsplex, grow local year-round sports opportunities, and benefit the community.”

During the meeting, the commission will discuss:

Final subdivision plat for Village at Bright’s Creek located on 43.85 acres west of the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Oak Road and including property on George Street and Ralph Sanderson Lane for 76 single-family lots.

Allowing vacation rental units at Waterway 101 for seven single-family cottages located at 101 E. 22nd Avenue or directly east of the State Route 59 bridge.

A site reauthorization for Peninsula Villas a 34-unit multiple-family development on 6.88 acres directly west of the east entrance to the Peninsula Golf and Raquet Club. It was first approved in Oct. of 2021 but that approval is about to expire and the applicant wants to extend it. Staff recommends approving the extension.
