As the sun dips below the horizon at 7:44 PM on Tuesday, August 1st, the night sky will light up with a beautiful, Full Sturgeon Moon. Named by Native American tribes for the large number of sturgeon fish that were once found in lakes and rivers during this time, the Sturgeon Moon is a symbol of abundance and prosperity.
The Sturgeon Moon will rise at 8:12 PM, casting its silvery glow across the gulf waters and beaches. This lunar event is a beautiful sight to behold, as the moon appears larger and brighter than usual due to its proximity to the horizon.
The Sturgeon Moon is not just a visual treat but also an important marker in the agricultural calendar. It signals the time when the sturgeon, a fish known for its size and longevity, are most readily caught. This has traditionally been a time of harvest and preparation for the colder months ahead.
But the celestial spectacle doesn't end there. August 2023 is a special month for moon enthusiasts. It is a "Blue Moon" month, a phenomenon that refers to the occurrence of two full moons in a single calendar month. The second full moon, the Blue Moon, will take place on August 30th.
The term "Blue Moon" is steeped in folklore and does not necessarily mean that the moon will appear blue. The phrase "once in a blue moon" signifies a rare event, and indeed, a Blue Moon is a rarity, occurring approximately once every 2.5 to 3 years.
The Blue Moon on August 30th will provide another opportunity for stargazers to marvel at the beauty of our celestial companion.
So, mark your calendars for these two special nights in August. Whether you're an avid astronomer, a casual stargazer, or someone who simply appreciates the beauty of nature, the Sturgeon Moon and the Blue Moon offer a chance to connect with the cosmos and reflect on our place within it.
Remember to look up and enjoy the show!
