Dog Walkers and Foster Care Volunteers Needed
The Gulf Shores Police are currently seeking volunteers to assist with walking dogs that are temporarily housed at the station. This call for help comes as the department works to care for stray dogs found within the community while searching for their owners or new homes. They are also seeking volunteers who’d be willing to provide foster care for the dogs while looking for their forever home.
When the police department receives reports of stray dogs, officers initially attempt to locate the owners through various means. If these efforts are unsuccessful, the dogs are brought to the station, where they are kept safe and cared for until a more permanent solution can be found. Currently, six dogs are being housed in kennels outside the station.
The need for volunteer dog walkers has become increasingly urgent due to the overcrowding issues faced by local animal shelters, which are unable to take in additional animals. The police department ensures that the dogs receive food, water, treats, and daily walks. However, the station is not equipped to serve as a long-term facility for these animals.
Community Service Officer Chris Hinton emphasized the importance of providing the dogs with regular exercise and companionship, which greatly enhances their well-being during their temporary stay. Volunteers are needed to help walk the dogs, offering them the opportunity to stretch their legs and enjoy some fresh air.
The commitment required from volunteers is minimal, but the impact on the dogs' happiness is significant. Those interested in volunteering can visit the Gulf Shores Police Department at 220 Clubhouse Drive to fill out the necessary paperwork.
In addition to volunteer dog walkers, the police department is also accepting donations of toys, treats, food, leashes, and other pet supplies. Donations can be dropped off at the front desk of the police department.
