Hurricane Helene Has Landed: How We Can Help

Ken Cooper • September 27, 2024

Alabama coastal residents know what support means

Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida last night. The focus now quickly shifts to relief and recovery efforts. While the full extent of the storm’s impact will unfold in the coming hours and days, relief agencies are already assisting in the affected communities. Whether you’re looking to donate supplies or provide financial support, there are several ways you can contribute to the recovery process.

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Ivan in 2004 and Sally in 2020, the Orange Beach area received tremendous support from communities across the Florida Panhandle. Our neighbors to the east stepped up to provide our area with much-needed assistance. They sent supplies, helped clear debris, and supported local rebuilding efforts when homes and businesses were devastated. Many also opened their homes to displaced residents and worked alongside relief teams, showing the true spirit of Gulf Coast residents. This strong tradition of neighborly aid is now a reminder of how interconnected our coastal communities remain, especially in times of crisis.

What’s Most Needed Right Now

While the immediate aftermath of a hurricane brings a need for many essential items, the reality is that monetary donations are often the most effective form of support. Financial contributions allow relief agencies the flexibility to purchase exactly what’s needed at any given moment, including items that may be scarce or difficult to transport. Funds can also be used to support long-term recovery efforts, such as housing repairs and community rebuilding initiatives.

That said, if you're interested in donating physical goods, here are some of the most critical items typically needed after a hurricane:

  • Non-perishable food: Canned goods, protein bars, baby formula, and ready-to-eat meals.
  • Water: Bottled water or water filtration systems.
  • First aid supplies: Bandages, antiseptics, and other basic medical supplies.
  • Baby items: Diapers, wipes, and baby formula.
  • Hygiene products: Soap, toothpaste, feminine hygiene items, and hand sanitizer.
  • Cleaning supplies: Disinfectants, gloves, and trash bags to aid in clean-up efforts.
  • Bedding and blankets: For shelters and families displaced by the storm.

Other Ways You Can Help...

For those wishing to contribute, donating through trusted organizations is essential. Many relief agencies are already mobilizing teams and accepting financial contributions online. Keep in mind that every little bit helps, and your support, whether through money, goods, or volunteer efforts, can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by the storm.

As Florida faces this latest challenge, the spirit of community and generosity will play a vital role in helping residents recover and rebuild. Whether near or far, your support can offer hope and relief to those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
