Closures for cities in southern Baldwin County

Gulf Shores Labor Day City Closures

Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, marks a day of rest and celebration for many in the United States. It also brings a series of closures to some public services. In Orange Beach, Foley, and Gulf Shores, Alabama, residents and visitors can expect various municipal offices, schools, and city services to remain closed in observance of the holiday. Essential services like fire and police will, of course, remain functioning as usual.


Below is a breakdown for Orange Beach, Foley, and Gulf Shores for this Labor Day Holiday.


Orange Beach’s Labor Day Schedule:

In observance of Labor Day, non-essential City of Orange Beach offices will be closed on Monday, September 4, 2023.


Trash and recycling will not be affected. All routes will run as normal.


Offices will open, with normal hours, on Tuesday, September 5th.


Foley’s Labor Day Schedule: 

Foley’s City Hall and non-essential city offices will be closed on Monday and reopen on Tuesday. 


Trash pickup scheduled for Monday, Sept. 4th in Foley will take place on Tuesday. 


Foley’s Police and Fire Departments will be open and functioning as usual.


Museums and other non-essential services will be closed. 


Gulf Shores’ Labor Day Schedule:

In honor of Labor Day, the City of Gulf Shores will have the following facility closures and changes to regular hours of operation: 


  • Gulf Shores Police Department, Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, and other emergency services will remain open to ensure public safety and health. 
  • Administrative offices for the City of Gulf Shores will be closed on Monday, September 4. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 5, at 8 a.m.
  • The Thomas B. Norton Public Library will be closed from Saturday, September 2, through Monday, September 4. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, September 5.
  • The Gulf Shores Museum will be closed from Saturday, September 2, through Monday, September 4. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, September 5.
  • The Bodenhamer Recreation Center will remain open on Monday, September 4, however, no fitness or water aerobics classes will be held. Classes will resume on Tuesday, September 5. 
  • The Cultural Center will be closed on Monday, September 4. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 5. 
  • The George C. Meyer Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, September 4. Courts will be open and available for public use. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, September 5.
  • The pickleball courts located at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex will remain open and available for public use. 
  • The Gulf Shores City Store will be closed on Monday, September 4. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 5.
  • Republic Services Garbage and Recycling Services will run as scheduled. Yard debris/bulky pickup will run as expected.
  • The City Council Work Session Meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 5 at 4 p.m.

The Annual Fort Morgan Oyster Fest is set to take place this weekend, February 22nd & 23rd at The Beach Club Resort & Spa. The event features all-you-can-eat oysters, live music, craft vendors, and various activities for attendees; including a larger kids area. This year's festival features several improvements, including daily ticket caps to control crowds and prevent long lines.

After 15 years of dedicated service, Gulf Shores Police Chief Ed Delmore has announced his retirement. Mayor Robert Craft informed the city council of Chief Delmore’s intent during a meeting this week. While he will no longer be heading the police department, Chief Delmore will stay on the force as a special investigator until the end of his term, which ends in November.

Alabama's 14th annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is set for Friday, February 21, through Sunday, February 23, 2025. During this period, residents can purchase essential severe weather preparedness items without paying the state's 4% sales tax. In some areas, local taxes will also be waived, allowing shoppers to save up to 10% on eligible items.
