The 60+ population is exploding and half are single residents

As the senior population of America has grown, so has the the amount of people over 65 who want to stay in their home. The cost of assisted living center and the lack of housing funding by Social Security has left much of the senior population in Baldwin County without daily social contact and secure nutrition.

Meals on Wheels of South Baldwin is managed by a Ecumenical Ministries and they have been making daily trips to homes in Foley, Elberta, Magnolia Springs and Bon Secour. Last month they provided over 1,000 meals to central Baldwin County.

“Those people may not have any other family in this area or anyone to help them. They’re having a hard time getting to the grocery store or cooking meals for themselves. And this is a way to ensure that that need is met,” said South Baldwin Director Ecumenical Ministries Margaret Calhoun.

Many of the assisted living centers in the south Baldwin region have quoted prices of $4,000 a month and higher. Some of the retirees would have a tough time financially if they had to leave their home and may not have the financial means for the private service. Through Meal on Wheels, many find it possible to stay in their homes and may have funds for a caretaker at times.

In order to raise their profile and bring more people in they’re holding bake sales at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. One will be this Friday morning at 8:30 and another will be on May 10th.
