Get ready for a weekend filled with fun, laughter, and flying fish! The Flora-Bama Lounge is hosting its 38th annual Mullet Toss this weekend, a one-of-a-kind event that brings people from all over the country together to celebrate, compete, and experience the unique Gulf Coast culture.
What is the Mullet Toss?
The Mullet Toss is an annual tradition at the Flora-Bama, which sees participants compete to see who can throw a dead mullet the furthest across the state line. As an essential part of the Gulf Coast's regional identity, mullet are plentiful in the area and serve as the perfect "tossing material" for this unique contest.
The event is not just about hurling fish; it is a community celebration that brings people from all walks of life to participate, socialize, and enjoy the beachfront festivities. The weekend is packed with live music, food, and drink specials, making it a must-attend event for both locals and tourists alike.
History of the Mullet Toss:
Initiated in 1985, the yearly custom began when Joe Gilchrist sought methods to boost off-season patronage for his beachfront bar. A pal, Jimmy Lewis, mentioned a cow chip tossing competition he'd experienced in Arkansas. The duo then devised their own variation, ultimately settling on the mullet.
Initially, the Mullet Toss was a small, local event, but it quickly gained popularity and grew into a major attraction, drawing thousands of visitors from around the country every year.
