National Ice Cream Day

Local Ice Cream Shops Celebrate Today

Today is a day that brings a smile to everyone's face, a day that is universally loved and celebrated - it's National Ice Cream Day! This cool treat holiday, celebrated on the third Sunday of July, is the perfect excuse to indulge in your favorite frozen treat.

National Ice Cream Day and National Ice Cream Month originated in the United States and are celebrated each year in July, with National Ice Cream Day falling on the third Sunday of the month. The celebrations were initiated by Joint resolution 298 in the United States Senate, sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky on May 17, 1984, and Joint resolution 543 in the United States House of Representatives, sponsored by Representative Kika de la Garza of Texas on April 11, 1984. The resolution declared July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month" and July 15, 1984, as "National Ice Cream Day". It was signed in to public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984, with Presidential Proclamation 5219. Even though the resolution only mentioned a specific month and day in 1984, the celebrations have continued in the years since, publicized by ice cream manufacturers.

If you are on the Alabama Gulf Coast, you're in for a real treat. Here are three fantastic places to celebrate National Ice Cream Day and beat the summer heat.
