Orange Beach School Recognized for AP Program Excellence

Orange Beach Middle and High School has been recognized for its Advanced Placement (AP) program, earning a Bronze distinction on the College Board's AP School Honor Roll. The school is one of only 24 Alabama public high schools to receive this recognition. The press release below details the recognition of the Orange Beach Schools.

Press Release:

Orange Beach, AL – The College Board announced that Orange Beach Middle and High School has been named to the Advanced Placement® program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning a “Bronze” distinction.

The AP® School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.

The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. For a school to be recognized on the AP School Honor Roll in a given year, it must meet the following criteria for its students in the most recent graduating class; these criteria are anchored in research-based relationships between AP and college outcomes.

  • 40% or more of the graduating cohort took at least 1 AP Exam during high school
  • 25% or more of the graduating cohort scored a three (3) or higher on at least one (1) AP Exam during high school
2% or more of the graduating cohort took five (5) or more AP exams during high school
  • At least one (1) of those exams was taken in ninth or tenth grade
  • Have full-time grade-12 enrollments
  • Be located within the United States

The award is considered for the most recent senior class and is not a comparison to other graduating classes. Twenty-four Alabama public high schools out of 386 received the College Board’s AP School Honor Roll recognition.

Orange Beach Middle and High School had 51% of seniors who took at least one AP exam during high school, 25% of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 3% of seniors who took five or more AP exams!

Orange Beach City students may choose from 12 AP courses taught over 26 sections by nine AP teachers.

Teachers and administrators are thrilled with the courses and student outcomes.

  • “I love teaching AP Language and Composition because our students leave the class prepared to be successful writers at the college level. I always tell my students that it doesn’t matter what your major is – all college students have to write!”
    – Kim McBee, AP Language and Composition Teacher

  • “AP Calculus teaches students how to think analytically, process complex problems, and manage their time. Students in AP Calculus are better students in every subject because AP teaches them how to learn, study, and prepare for exams. I love teaching AP courses because I get to help students learn more about themselves and their metacognition.”
    – Drew Castillow, AP Calculus and AP PreCalculus teacher

  • “AP training helped me as a teacher, allowing me to collaborate with other AP teachers to see what worked and what didn’t in their course studies. I could take that directly into the classroom to benefit my students. In addition, the AP training is helpful in that you can take it back to the classroom immediately to implement strategies and content knowledge to prepare students for the AP exam. AP courses are rigorous and prepare students for college coursework!”
    – Anabel Bamberg, former AP Literature and Composition teacher and AP Coordinator for Orange Beach

  • “The Advanced Placement program, a set of college-level courses and exams, prepares students for college coursework's rigors and high expectations. The students are much more prepared and know what to expect when they arrive on campus.”
    – Chris Shaw, Principal OBMHS

The College Board’s Advanced Placement® program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond.

In addition to last week's honors of Orange Beach Elementary School being named Best Elementary School in Baldwin County and Orange Beach Middle and High School (OBMHS) being named School of Distinction and School of Excellence,
OBMHS was recognized by the College Board for student success.
