Region Celebrates National Seafood Month

Beaches, water and seafood are big part of local community

Gulf Shores event news

It is only fitting that the Shrimp Festival takes place during National Seafood month. October is a time to celebrate the vital role seafood plays in the culture, economy, and culinary traditions of the Gulf Coast. From Orange Beach to Gulf Shores, and across the coastal areas of Alabama, seafood is more than just a meal—it’s a way of life.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to one of the most productive seafood industries in the United States. The region is renowned for its variety of seafood, including shrimp, oysters, snapper, and blue crab; to mention a few. Gulf shrimp, often referred to as "white gold," is a key part of the local economy, with generations of families working in shrimping and fishing. In fact, Alabama ranks as one of the top producers of shrimp in the nation.

Local restaurants and seafood markets in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and surrounding areas showcase fresh catches and unique seafood dishes on their menus daily. Visitors and residents alike can enjoy Gulf-fresh delicacies at iconic local spots.

In addition to dining, October is also a time to highlight the importance of seafood sustainability. Organizations like the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council work to promote sustainable seafood practices to ensure that Gulf Coast fisheries remain productive for generations to come.

National Seafood Month is not just a celebration of food—it’s an acknowledgment of the rich maritime heritage of the Gulf Coast, the resilience of its communities, and the dedication of those who work on the water. An example of the Gulf Coast celebrating National Seafood Month is the Annual National Shrimp Festival which kicks off tomorrow.
