UPDATE at 8:50am from the Orange Beach Fire Dept.: At approximately 8:34am a body was located inside of Perdido Pass, believed to be the missing swimmer from last night. Please keep the family in your prayers.

A 26-year-old swimmer has been reported missing from the Perdido Pass section of Orange Beach. The Orange Beach Fire and Rescue responded to the report Saturday afternoon, at approximately 5:30 PM. The search was suspended at dark and resumed Sunday morning.
“A bystander attempted a rescue but was unsuccessful and managed to get back to shore safely,” Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Smith said.
Smith said the Orange Beach dive team was called out along with all the city’s lifeguards, the Orange Beach Police Marine Division and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The search ended at dark and resumed the next morning.
This is the first drowning in Orange Beach since a 47-year-old Texas man drowned on June 20 when purple and red flags were flying. On Aug. 5, officials were flying purple and yellow flags at the city’s beaches.
The currents in the Perdido Pass area are known for their swift speeds. Rescue personnel remind swimmers to remain close to shore and take precautions, avoiding swift currents.
