Welcome to the longest month of the year so far, January. Known not as a month filled with extra days, but one where the days seem longer as the weeks seem slower.


Not to worry, the Gulf Coast is filled with year-round adventures of art, theater, music, great food, new upskills, and sometimes a little mystery. So grab your calendars and get ready to save the dates for some of the island's greatest winter adventures. 


Monday, January 8th -
Tacky Jacks ``Art al Fresco”  is back for a winter series full of fun activities at two of its local locations. Orange Beach is up first with an art medium called Squeegee Painting. This two-part project starts at 10 AM and lasts for one hour. During this time, participants will learn to create masterpieces on canvas in this innovative art expression. RSVP is required, and the cost is $25 and includes all materials plus a bonus $10 lunch card so you can lunch and learn. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early and check in upstairs before getting started. Tuesday, January 9th -
Everybody loves a good chef-designed meal, but what about a chef-led cooking class? Cobalt in Orange Beach is lending restaurant chefs to the public to share their incredible talents with the community. For just $25 per person, future chefs will get a chance to learn from some of the island's best of show and whip up some delicious meals. Each meal will be of sampling size to ensure there is enough room to try every one of the special courses. Spots are limited for the limited-time offer and not only include the meals but also one glass of wine, all for the fixed cost of the class. Wednesday, January 10th -
Quietly waiting for their meals, the onlookers at Luna’s could tell that something in the air wasn’t quite right. As they listened to the whispers coming from the back, they could feel the goosebumps rising on their skin. Suddenly, the overhead lights dimmed and flashed. It would appear that they had a mystery to solve, A Murder Mystery gone wrong. Make your reservations now for limited seating and a cash bar to join others in trying your hand as a detective ready to solve the mystery of who did it. The Murder Mystery That Went Wrong is a live interactive murder mystery comedy featuring New York actor, Frank Lash, and the Southern Repertory Theater Company. Will you be able to discover the truth? Tickets are $45 for adults and $25 for children under the age of $12. A buffet will be open from 5:15-6:15 PM showtime at 6:30 PM. The game is afoot.

Thursday, January 11th -
South Baldwin Community Theatre has selected seven dates to welcome The Fantasticks to their stage. The story is about two young romancers, Matt and Luisa, who are starting to have trouble on lover’s lane thanks to both their fathers. Join the beloved theatergoers of 50 years as bandit narrator El Gallo tells the tale of how they overcome or fall apart from the effects of their father’s meddling ways. Sit back and watch this talented group as they cultivate one incredible musical allegory. Tickets are on sale now, Adults $20 and Students $15.

Friday, January 12th - 
Registration is open for 2024’s Winter Showcase Series presented by the Gulf State Park. Each presentation will take place in the Learning Center ( Conservation Hall) and will last for one hour. Scutes, Scales, and Tails will start at 10:30 AM and feature several reptile animal ambassadors who are natives of Southern Alabama. Dive into this educational hour to learn about how each one adapts to the diverse habitats of the Gulf Coast. Not only will guests get to learn about some of these reptiles but also have a chance to interact, touch, and even get some photos at the end of the presentation. Saturday, January 13th -
 Coastal Alabama Business Chamber for Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is hosting its annual E-Cycling & ShredDay. Time to declutter your console table, and empty those electronic and office drawers for the new year all without having to step out of the driver's seat. Each vehicle is limited to 50 pounds, no need to take paper clips out of paperwork, just make sure not to seal any boxes or tie any bags, grab, go and drop off. Electronics are allowed as long as batteries have been removed if applicable. The event will run from 8 AM - 12 PM at the Gulf State Park Beach Pavilion. Sunday, January 14th -
Football days are for friends, family, food and fun and Zeke’s has one epic NFL Sunday Funday prepped and ready to go. Check out Mo’s Fishing bar with widescreen tv’s displays all around. Any game guests want to enjoy, the staff will make sure it is on one or more of the screens so no one misses a play. The Annual Fort Morgan Oyster Fest is set to take place this weekend, February 22nd & 23rd at The Beach Club Resort & Spa. The event features all-you-can-eat oysters, live music, craft vendors, and various activities for attendees; including a larger kids area. This year's festival features several improvements, including daily ticket caps to control crowds and prevent long lines.

After 15 years of dedicated service, Gulf Shores Police Chief Ed Delmore has announced his retirement. Mayor Robert Craft informed the city council of Chief Delmore’s intent during a meeting this week. While he will no longer be heading the police department, Chief Delmore will stay on the force as a special investigator until the end of his term, which ends in November.

Alabama's 14th annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is set for Friday, February 21, through Sunday, February 23, 2025. During this period, residents can purchase essential severe weather preparedness items without paying the state's 4% sales tax. In some areas, local taxes will also be waived, allowing shoppers to save up to 10% on eligible items.
