Council to also Address Festival Liquor Licenses

Foley will consider two requests from a developer on a rezoning and pre-zoning of two parcels located on the north end of town along the Foley Beach Express.

In its Jan. 6 joint regular/work session, the city council will have a second reading and possible vote on the rezonings at the request of Delaney Investments/Springdale Stores on parcels located south of Pastoral Lane and east of the Foley Beach Express.

One request is to rezone one of the parcels from extended business to planned unit development and the other is to pre-zone another property to planned unit development. Both of the tracts – one 190 acres and the other 525 acres – are to be part of Cresswind Foley and the planning commission voted to give a favorable recommendation to the city council on the plans.

According to a letter from the planning commission to the council, Kolter Homes from Newnan, Georgia, is looking to buy the properties from Delaney/Springdale for a new development. Plans call for more than 1,300 lots in the project.

Delaney Investments is the original developer of Springdale Mall in Mobile and has developed several other commercial projects in Mobile and around the country. Projects developed in Mobile include a Lowe’s, Walmart and other apartment and commercial developments, according to the company website.

During the joint regular/work session, the council will:

  • Consider a zoning ordinance change to add a Board of Adjustments for appeals on decisions made by the Community Development Director or other city officials.
  • Discuss declaring real property as surplus and authorizing its sale. No details were provided in the agenda as to where the city-owned property was located.
  • Have a second reading and possibly a vote on an ordinance establishing safety protocols for Foley city parks.
  • Consider approving a liquor license for the Gumbo and Alabama Slammer Festival on Jan. 25 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Heritage Park.
  • Consider approving a liquor license for Pizza Hut at 1350 S. McKenzie St.
  • Discuss a resolution amending the pay classification plan for general government.
  • Address a resolution to waive fees for the use of Heritage Park and pavilion for the annual Alzheimer’s Awareness fundraiser on Oct. 4 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Consider accepting a Friends of the Library donation of $4,400 to buy a gaming computer and STEAM ozobots.
  • Discuss declaring lights on the soccer field at the Ralph Schumacher Soccer Complex.
  • Discuss reappointing Sharron Wineman to the Senior Center Advisory Board and Nedra Bell to the Foley Housing Authority Board.
  • Consider using local drug fund money to buy barricade covers for the police department for $1,618 from Epic Solutions.
  • Discuss declaring an enclosed trailer used by the fire department as surplus.
  • Consider a resolution of support for the Baldwin County Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan.
  • Discuss an amendment to the New Year’s fireworks shot at OWA.

We have all heard some version of the "In My Day" stories, right? Your parents or grandparents had to walk for miles to school, uphill, in a blizzard or in pouring-down rain to get to school ... both ways! Of course, we don’t advocate children walking for miles in extreme conditions but a little exercise each day doesn’t hurt.
