Foley Council Considers $750,000 Upgrades To FHS Practice Field

Items to be considered at City Council Meeting

The Foley City Council will meet in a joint regular/work session on Sept. 5 in council chambers at city hall at 4 p.m. Among the items on the agenda include considering the adoption of the fiscal year 2024 budget.


During the joint meeting, the council will also:


Have a public hearing on an ordinance change to add a “planned development district” regarding mixed-use developments.


Have a public hearing on a zoning change request from Gary Underwood to have his property just west of the Foley Beach Express on U.S. 98 from open agricultural to extended business district.


Conduct a public hearing on a rezoning request by various owners to rezone the common area in Sherwood Subdivision from neighborhood district to single-family residential. The 8.71-acre parcel is located west of South Hickory Street on Ocala Drive.


Have an introduction of an ordinance amendment to the code and fee schedule to upgrade codes related to inspections and code enforcement including fire safety.


Discuss a resolution to amend the East Verbena Avenue parking improvements including approving a contract with Capstone Engineering Group for $27,668 for design, testing and soliciting bids for the project.


Consider approving monthly charges from Riviera Utilities for lighting being installed for Ivan Jones Stadium on North Pine Street.


Discuss authorizing bid solicitation and $130,500 in funding for the electrical work at the new Public Works complex.


Discuss allowing the use of Heritage Park by the Jehovah’s Witness Community to display literature until Jan. 1.


Consider a resolution to pay Thompson Engineering $88,700 for design of improvements to the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Hickory Street.


Consider waiving fees for the use of Heritage Park and pavilion on Oct. 7 for an Alzheimer’s walk fundraiser.


Discuss waiving fees at the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market to the Foley Professional Firefighters Union on Oct. 22.


Discuss approving a $500 sponsorship for the Sister City Program’s 5K run fundraiser.


Consider a contract with Capstone Engineering Group for $20,000 for services related to addressing drainage issues along Parkwood Drive.


Discuss accepting the Planning Commission’s approval of subdivision regulations.


Discuss changing three meeting dates in 2024 to avoid conflicts with holidays. The council will meet on Tuesdays on Jan. 2, Jan. 16, and Sept. 3 because New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day and Labor Day all fall on a Monday.


Consider amending city budgets during fiscal year 2023 to cover unexpected costs that arose during the year. Those include $23,000 to Public Works, $3,000 to Engineering, $3,000 to Horticulture and $10,000 to the Welcome Center.


Discuss a resolution to accept a bid of $53,620 for equipment and installation of the radio system for the fire and police departments to improve reliability and redundancy.


Consider spending $167,000 for school crosswalk improvements on North Cedar Street, North Pine Street and south Cedar Street.


Discuss approving a grant preapplication from the airport for an FAA grant from the agency’s Airport Terminals Program. It will seek just more than $2 million. A second preapplication will be also be discussed for reimbursement of work for taxiway access improvements for a total of $166,667. A third preapplication to the FAA seeks $176,667 in reimbursement for construction of a T-hangar building.


Discuss spending $750,000 for lighting and bleachers at the practice field at Foley High School.


Consider accepting the results of the annexation vote bringing the Mills Community into the city. The council will also consider approving 55 street lights in the community along Bodenhamer Road, Sandy Ridge Road, Angie Drive, Lymon Lane and Pettibone Lane.

The event features all-you-can-eat oysters, live music, craft vendors, and various activities for attendees; including a larger kids area. After 15 years of dedicated service, Gulf Shores Police Chief Ed Delmore has announced his retirement. Mayor Robert Craft informed the city council of Chief Delmore’s intent during a meeting this week. While he will no longer be heading the police department, Chief Delmore will stay on the force as a special investigator until the end of his term, which ends in November.
