The Foley City Council has officially approved the annexation of the remaining Mills Community, following a vote that took place on August 22. The decision came after Mills residents cast their ballots in favor of becoming part of the city of Foley.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich stated that the successful referendum was the culmination of over a year of efforts by Mills residents. "The residents demonstrated community pride and appreciated the city's support in this endeavor," said Hellmich. He emphasized that the initiative gained momentum due to a dedicated group of individuals who actively engaged with the community.

Streetlight Installation

In addition to the annexation, the council has also approved the installation of 55 new streetlights in the Mills area. These lights will be strategically placed along Bodenhamer Road, Sandy Ridge Road, Angie Drive, Lymon Lane, and Pettibone Lane. Riviera Utilities will handle the installation, while the city will cover the operational costs, estimated at $330 per month.

Community Park and Services

The city is in the process of acquiring a four-acre parcel for the construction of a community park. This land will be subdivided from a larger parcel. Mayor Hellmich also revealed that the city is coordinating with Baldwin County to transition services, such as garbage collection, to the newly annexed area. Residents can expect city garbage cans to be distributed soon.

Collaborative Projects

Discussions are underway between the city and the Baldwin County Commission for joint projects in the Mills area. These projects include the construction of sidewalks on streets that fall under both city and county jurisdictions.

The annexed Mills Community comprises approximately 105 residential lots, housing around 170 residents.
