Gulf Shores Dolphins and Sunny 105 Kick Off Football Season

A new high school football season has begun for the Gulf Shores Dolphins. Last year's Alabama State 4A Champions start this season in division 6A. Coach Mark Hudspeth and the Dolphins start the season ranked #3 for division 6a, according to MaxPreps, a service of CBS Sports.


As with last season, Sunny 105.7 will be carrying each game live on the radio station. David DeJean and Mark Swalley will be calling the games each week. Sunny 105.7 is also launching a new program called "Coaches Corner" to keep local high school football fans connected and informed. Starting on August 27, 2024, the show will air every other Tuesday night from 7 to 7:30 PM throughout the football season. Broadcast live from Yo Ho Rum and Tacos at the Wharf, "Coaches Corner" will feature interviews with coaches and players from Orange Beach, offering insights into the Makos games. The program will be available both on-air and online, making it accessible for listeners to tune in from anywhere. "Coaches Corner" is sponsored by Brett-Robinson, Bryant Bank, and Wildcat Construction.


The first game started at 7PM tonight, August, 23rd. The Gulf Shores Dolphins faced the Choctawhatchee Indians from Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Gulf Shores lost 24 seniors last season but trained up the new starters during the off-season.

THE GAME:


Choctawhatchee won the coin toss. The Indians received the ball. The Choctawhatchee Indians jumped out to a quick start driving down the field. Once the were across the fifty yard line. Landon Everett made some big stops but the Indians drove by running the ball and scoring on their first drive. Choctawhatchee lead by 7 points.


With 8 minutes in the first quarter, the Gulf Shores Dolphins returned the kick-off to the 45 yard line. Judd Harris (Sophomore) quarterbacked and threw a 1st down pass on the first possession. Dolphins ran the ball on 4th down and Wilson moved the ball over the marker. Kolin Wilson kept successfully running the ball until Harris threw a touchdown pass to Nick Hampton. The Game is tied 7-7


Choctawhatchee Indians received the kick-off but got a penalty on the return. Starting on their own 24 the Indians continued to run the ball. With 2:39 in the first quarter the Indians met stiffer defense from the Dolphins, especially from Landon Everett. However the Indians threw the ball for a first down down to the 20 of Gulf Shores. The quarter ended in a 7-7 tie with the Indians having possession deep in the Dolphins side of the field.


Carter Byrd of the Dolphins made a big stop so the Choctawhatchee Indians were forced to make a field goal and the score was 10-7 with the Indians in the lead.


The Gulf Shores Dolphins continued to run the ball with Kolin Wilson. Wilson broke out with a screen pass and pushed the ball to midfield. On a 4th down the Dolphins made a quick punt to the Indians 17 yard line with 9:08 in the first half.


The Choctawhatchee Indians made a long run from scrimmage down to the Dolphin's 25. The Dolphin's defense kept the Indians in check and Carter Byrd recovered the ball for the Dolphins.


From their own 15, the Gulf Shores Dolphins were stopped by the Indians and punted from their own 22.


The Indians resumed their running game and drove for a first down. With four minutes until half-time, Choctawhatchee remained running for tough yards. Everette of Gulf Shores held them and the Indians punted into the endzone.


Wilson of Gulf Shores had command of the ball but could not make gains. Harris then attempted a throw and Choctawhatchee committed pass interference. After facing a tough defensive wall by the Indians the Dolphins ran out the clock with the half ending 10-7, Indian's lead.


2ND HALF:


Choctawhatchee kicked off to the Dolphins, who started their drive from their own 35 yard line. Gulf Shores threw the ball during the series and the ball was intercepted by the Indians, who returned the ball for a touchdown. The Indians then led 17-7.


Choctawhatchee again kicked off to the Dolphins. From their own 27 the Dolphins began their drive. The Dolphins pushed the run game with Kolin Wilson. Choctawhatchee's defense held tough but committed another pass interference for a 15 yard penalty. The Dolphins were unable to move the chains and punted to the Indians.


After a short punt the Choctawhatchee Indians had the ball at midfield. The Indians running game pushed for a first down. Jamichael Garrett of Gulf Shores provided solid defense. The Indians continued their drive on the ground for another 1st down. With under four minutes left in the 3rd quarter the Indians passed to the one yard line. Choctawhatchee then scored a short touchdown. After the PAT the Indians lead the game 24-7.


Gulf Shores started their next drive from their own 19 yard line with a new quarterback, Davis Barnett. Wilson had strong runs for the Dolphins and were able to gain a first down. After a defensive penalty and a reverse by Gulf Shores, the dolphins threw for a big gain to Kolin Wilson. Later he drove to the Indian's 20 yard line as the quarter ended.


Going into the fourth quarter the Choctawhatchee Indians still had the 24-7 lead.


The Dolphins were unsuccessful on moving the ball and turned over the ball on downs.


Choctawhatchee Indians ran the ball up the middle. The Indians continued to keep the ball on the ground and protect their lead. After driving the ball by rushing, Choctawhatchee ran deep into the Dolphin's side of the field. The Indians punched in the ball, making the score 31-7  after the PAT.


With 1:21 left in the game Gulf Shores received the kick-off. From their own 31 yard line they began their drive. The Dolphins ran out the clock and the game ended with Choctawhatchee Indians (31)  Gulf Shores Dolphins (7).


Next week the Dolphins travel to Semmes.
